You don’t need to break up with your phone; just ease up a bit. Consider it a break. Luckily for you, we have some tips to help!

Step Away from the Phone: Knowing When to Surrender

You get it: you don’t actually, literally need your phone all the time. In fact, almost half of teens surveyed (45 percent) said they can get frustrated with their friends for texting, checking, surfing, and scrolling while they’re hanging out together.1 For most of us, we spend up to an hour right before lights out (or after the lights are out) checking social media before falling asleep. And the first thing we do after hitting the snooze on our phones in the morning? Start checking again.

It’s a tick, a bad habit, that we can break. What would happen if you didn’t check your social media first thing in the morning?* What if you spend only fifteen minutes in the evening checking instead of an hour?* What if you didn’t immediately look up every question that popped in your head, the moment it formed?* Does it really matter how many passes Brady connected at last Sunday’s game, or what the name of Kylie’s new lip liner is?** Or at least, does it matter right now, the moment the thought occurs to you? Probably not. So the next time you go to unlock your phone to look up something random, pause. Do you really need to know? Or can you carry on with your life without knowing every single thing at the moment it comes to you?
